The Slovak government has already taken a new course towards Ukraine: is Poland also turning away from Zelensky?

The head of the ‘Towards Social Democracy’ party has already been prime minister in Slovakia twice. Now Robert Fico (59) won the House of Representatives elections again and was able to take office for the third time. Much to the suffering of Ukraine.

The emotional rollercoaster of Volodymyr Selenski (45) starts on September 30. Left-wing populist and Putin friend Robert Fico (59) wins the parliamentary elections in Slovakia and announces: no more weapons for Ukraine – and Slovakia first! Moreover, the country could block EU and NATO military aid to Ukraine in the future in a duet with Hungary, which is also close to Russia.

The next day, the US unexpectedly cut the money to Kiev – a condition of the Republicans to resolve the dangerous budget impasse, which the Democrats reluctantly signed. The American people also need financial help, argue the archconservatives in the US Congress.

The fear in Kiev remains. Poland will elect a new parliament on October 15. The conservative PiS party leads in surveys. There is a threat of a coalition with the pro-Russian, ultra-right party Konfederacja and thus bad cards for Ukraine. Almost two weeks ago, the Polish Prime Minister surprisingly withdrew military support to Kiev. You need weapons for your own defense, Mateusz Morawiecki (55) announced in September. Election campaign maneuvers or change of political direction?

Concentrated EU diplomacy surprisingly in Kiev

In between, hope flares up. On Monday, all EU foreign ministers traveled to Kiev for a secret mission. They are campaigning in the EU for additional financial aid worth billions for the supply of fighter jets, missiles and air defense systems. The latter to protect critical infrastructure in winter. Your message: The EU starts in Ukraine.

And the photos from Warsaw and other Polish cities are also encouraging. Hundreds of thousands of people crowd the boulevards in protest against the PiS party, which is still in power. The leader of the ‘March of a Million Hearts’ is the Polish opposition leader Donald Tusk (66). The ex-prime minister of Poland and former president of the European Council is in second place in the polls. Can he still turn things around in his favor (and in Ukraine’s favor)?

Joe Biden: “We will not abandon Ukraine”

Finally, Fico’s announced policy in Slovakia is not yet clear. His left-wing populist party ‘Towards – Social Democracy’ does not obtain an absolute majority with 23.37 percent of the votes and needs a coalition partner. The ‘Vote – Social Democracy’ by Peter Pellegrini (48) could be considered. But the Social Democrat supports the EU and military aid to Ukraine. His party came third in the elections with 18 percent of the vote, behind the liberal Progressive Slovakia (PS), and was also able to form a governing coalition with the PS.

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden (80) is trying to calm people from distant Washington. The Democrat promises that the US will not abandon Ukraine. A consolation for Zelensky, for now. So it’s not every day in the evening. But the world seems to have become more unpredictable for the country at war. The longer this lasts, the more solidarity threatens to weaken.
