Poland recently threatened Ukraine with a halt to arms deliveries to the embattled country defending itself against Russian invaders. On Saturday, the US temporarily froze all aid to Ukraine – a concession to conservatives, otherwise an emergency bridge loan for the US federal government would have failed in Congress.
On Sunday, US President Joe Biden (80) urgently warned members of Congress that Ukraine would run out of time if it did not receive US aid again soon. Kiev’s counter-offensive is urgent and the Ukrainian armed forces urgently need all possible war resources.
“We cannot allow (our aid) to be interrupted,” Biden said on Twitter. He “expects that (…) support to Ukraine will be assured at this critical moment.”
From the Roosevelt Room in the West Wing of the White House, Biden also made an urgent appeal to US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (58), representatives and senators. “We don’t have a lot of time and there is an overwhelming sense of urgency,” Biden said, referring to the 45-day interim budget, which lasts only until mid-November. Biden called on Congress to negotiate an aid package as soon as possible.
“The vast majority of both parties – Democrats and Republicans, Senate and House of Representatives – support Ukraine,” Biden said. They are against “the brutal aggression imposed on them by Russia. “Stop playing games, get the job done.”
Addressing the audience, Biden said: “I want to assure our American allies, the American people and the Ukrainian people that they can count on our support and that we will not retreat.”
Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives McCarthy responded Sunday that he remains committed to supporting Ukraine. However, U.S. security issues should be a “bigger priority for U.S. lawmakers.”
“The American border is important and more Americans are dying at our border than in Ukraine,” McCarthy said in an interview with CBS. He suggested that future financial packages for Ukraine should include provisions to ensure U.S. border security.
The southern border of the United States is currently being overrun by migrants from Latin America. This year alone, three million refugees are expected to flood into America.
Ukraine is already planning to become a major arms producer itself. Ukrainian President Volodiumir Zelenskiy has already warned that a decline in US support could have serious consequences for the war effort. During a speech on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (45) offered special conditions to foreign defense companies if they were willing to develop arms production together with Kiev.
Kiev Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba (42) wrote on Twitter that Ukraine not only received military aid from allies, but also started its own weapons production. Russia makes a mistake when it gambles on a lack of arms aid to Ukraine.
“Russia is making a mistake if it thinks it can ‘wait’ for military aid to Ukraine,” Kuleba said. “We are not just bringing weapons to Ukraine. We are increasing domestic production and co-production with partners in NATO and beyond.” (kes)
