“We must equip ourselves”: These countries put their aid to Ukraine on hold

Should Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky be concerned?

Since the start of the war, Ukraine has been dependent on weapons and aid materials from friendly states. Last but not least, the Himars missile system from the US and the Leopard 2 tanks from Germany gave the defender a decisive advantage against Russia. But aid to Ukraine is crumbling; Some countries are likely to stop their deliveries for the time being. An overview.

USA

The US was able to pass a new budget just a few hours before the deadline. With serious consequences for Kiev, however: in order to finance their own government, the Americans will suspend all aid to Ukraine for the next month and a half.

Since the outbreak of the war, the US has provided aid worth approximately 67 billion francs, of which 40 billion for military purposes alone. This means that Ukraine’s biggest helper is now ceasing its deliveries, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (45) is said to be particularly dependent on modern military equipment from the West for his counter-offensive.

Slovakia

In the parliamentary elections in Slovakia, the left-wing populist party Smer-SD of former Prime Minister Robert Fico (59) received the most votes. After counting almost all votes on Sunday, the NATO- and EU-critical party received 23.3 percent.

During the election campaign, the party announced its intention to stop military aid to Ukraine. In terms of gross domestic product, Slovakia is one of Europe’s biggest supporters of Ukraine. Bratislava sent MiG fighter jets to Kiev, among other things.

Poland

After a dispute over Ukrainian grain deteriorated, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, 55, announced: “We will no longer transfer weapons to Ukraine because we are equipping ourselves with the most modern weapons.” With around four billion francs in aid, Poland was the fourth largest European arms supplier to Kiev.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin (70) probably hopes that other Western countries will also refrain from arms deliveries in the future. Russia, in turn, also appears to be dependent on new military equipment. Putin recently met with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un (39) to discuss possible military cooperation.

Despite everything, Ukraine can still count on the help of numerous Western states. Two weeks ago, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (63) announced a package for Ukraine worth almost 400 million francs. (AFP/obf)
