The Senegalese navy intercepts more than six hundred migrants in a few days. A shift to the left in Slovakia could weaken support for Ukraine

The navy in Senegal, West Africa, says it has stopped more than 600 migrants trying to leave the Atlantic Ocean in just a few days. On Saturday, a patrol ship intercepted two wooden boats carrying 262 people, including 26 women and 13 minors, the navy said on Sunday. According to information from Saturday, another three boats with a total of 343 people on board were stopped on Thursday and Friday. The passengers were brought ashore and handed over to authorities, it said. The Navy did not provide information about the countries of origin.

Boats repeatedly leave Senegal and surrounding countries for the Canary Islands, which are about 1,500 kilometers away and belong to Spain. The Atlantic Ocean, with its strong currents and high waves, is considered one of the most dangerous escape routes to Europe. According to the UN migration agency IOM, 150 boats with 7,213 people on board arrived in the Canary Islands from Africa in the first half of the year. That was less than in the same period last year, when 8,741 people arrived on 193 boats. (sda/dpa)
