Paris has a bedbug problem! Numerous videos of the annoying pests that seem to be spreading unstoppably in the French capital have been circulating on social media for weeks. Bed bugs are now increasingly seen in homes, hotels, trains and even movie theaters, CNN reports.
Now the French government has put the issue on its agenda. Transport Minister Clément Beaune (42) said on Friday that he would “consult with the transport companies next week” to “take further measures”. The aim of the campaign is to calm the public and protect Parisians from the blood-sucking insects.
The invasion of bed bugs is also a top priority in the Paris city government. In an interview with French broadcaster LCI last Friday, Emmanuel Grégoire (45), deputy mayor of Paris, described the problem as “widespread”.
Despite a campaign to combat bed bugs launched by the French government three years ago, the pests have not yet been eradicated.
For Johanne Fite of the French Agency for Food, Environment and Occupational Safety, it is clear where the problem comes from. “It’s largely due to the movement of people, the traveling population and the fact that people are staying in short-term accommodations and bringing bed bugs with them in their luggage,” Fite told CNN.
The health expert further assumes that the number of bed bugs will probably increase even further in the near future. Because: “We are observing more and more bed bug populations that are resistant, so there is no silver bullet to get rid of them.”
Despite everything, deputy mayor Grégoire warns against hysteria. More and more Parisians are turning to the city hall’s information services for information about bed bugs.
For the City of Light, the timing of the plague invasion could not have been worse. The Summer Olympics start in less than a year. However, Grégoire made it clear in the LCI interview: “There is no threat to the Olympic Games.”
Bed bugs have always existed and the games offer everyone the opportunity to work together on the problem. (ced)
