Jimmy Carter turns 99 in palliative care

Former US President Jimmy Carter He turns 99 this Sunday in very fragile health, seven months in palliative care at home and in the company of his wife Rosalyn Carter, who suffers from dementia.

In an interview published two weeks ago by USA Today, the former president’s grandson and president Carter CenterJason Carter, admitted that the couple is “coming to an end”, but they are together and in love.

Jason Carter said his grandfather is going through “really significant physical challenges” but is spending time with his family and watching baseball games.

Despite their fragile health, the couple made a public appearance on September 23, when they visited a festival in their hometown of Plains, Georgia.

The Carter Center has published photos in which it appears a couple in the back seat of a red convertiblesmiling and wearing promotional t-shirts for the event.

To commemorate the former president’s 99th birthday, the Carter Center organized a series of activities, including the creation of a “mosaic” of audiovisual greetings from citizens and personalities that they had collected in recent weeks.

“Our mosaic project is a symbolic way to show how we all played a part in President Carter’s extraordinary legacy of service to humanity,” the center said.

They will also hold personal events in Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum this Saturday, after it was decided to start due to a possible shutdown of the Government, which would also mean the temporary closure of state facilities.

On February 18, it was revealed that Jimmy Carter, aged 98, had decided to start receiving palliative care at home instead of medical interventions after a series of hospital admissions.

The 2002 Nobel Peace Prize winner underwent cancer treatment in 2015 after a small growth was removed from his liver that later spread to his brain, where four malignant melanomas were found.

After treatment, however, doctors discovered that, against all odds, the cancer has gone away.

The former president has also suffered several falls in the past that have limited his mobility, such as the one he had in 2019 in which he broke his pelvis.

Months after it was revealed that Carter had refused hospital care, it was revealed on May 30 that the former first lady was suffering from dementia. Both have been married for over 77 years.

“Go on she lives happily at home with her husbandenjoying spring in the Plains and visiting loved ones,” the center noted at the time about the former first lady, who has devoted much of her life to advocating for the nation’s mental health.
