The Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense has announced “retaliatory measures” after an Azerbaijani soldier was killed by a sniper on the border with Armenia.
Armenia immediately rejected the accusation on Saturday. Baku’s claim that Armenian soldiers opened fire on Azerbaijani positions “does not correspond to reality,” the Armenian Ministry of Defense wrote in the online service Telegram.
The soldier was shot at and killed on Azerbaijani territory in the afternoon “from the village of Kut in Armenia,” the Defense Ministry said in Baku. Units of the Azerbaijani armed forces would take “retaliatory measures.”
On September 19, Azerbaijan launched a large-scale military offensive in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, inhabited mainly by Armenians. Only a day later, the pro-Armenian fighters there declared their surrender. On Thursday, the dissolution of the self-proclaimed Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh was announced on January 1, 2024. Almost all Armenian residents of Nagorno-Karabakh have now fled to Armenia. (AFP)
