This week, Elon Musk (52), the richest person in the world, tried to become a citizen reporter himself. On his platform X, Musk reported live from the American border in El Paso – where approximately 2,000 refugees are currently pouring into the US every day. Not one is returned.
According to the Washington Office for Latin America, about 8,000 people currently flow freely to America every day. Musk calculates that this amounts to almost three million per year. It can be assumed that the number of unreported cases is much higher.
But Musk hasn’t just focused on his own refugee crisis. The Tesla founder and multi-billionaire used his internet platform X (formerly Twitter) on Friday to interfere in German politics a week before the state elections in Bavaria and Hesse. Musk shared a video clip from an X user called Radio Genoa in which he called on people to vote for the AfD.
The article criticizes the fact that eight German-backed rescue ships are currently receiving refugees and migrants from the Mediterranean to take them to Italy. “These NGOs are subsidized by the federal government,” the article says. “Let’s hope the AfD wins the elections to stop this European suicide.”
Musk, who has almost 160 million followers, says: “Is the German public aware of this?” The Berlin Foreign Ministry responded immediately, replying to Musk succinctly in English: “Yes. And that’s called saving lives.”
The background to Musk’s tweet is the Italian government’s criticism that Germany is supporting sea rescue services this year with up to two million euros.
On Friday, Musk, who likes to comment on politically explosive topics, explained the refugee issue in more detail. On X he wrote: “Illegal immigration must be stopped.” “But he is a strong supporter of significantly expanding and simplifying legal immigration. Anyone who proves to be hardworking, talented and honest should be able to become an American. Point.”
On the same day, he again criticized the traditional media. “Newspapers really only report what they read on X yesterday,” Musk said dismissively. “I don’t read the old media propaganda much anymore. It is a waste of time and a generator of sadness.” (kes)
