At least 54 people have been killed in a suspected suicide bombing during a religious procession in Pakistan, according to official figures. The incident near a mosque in Baluchistan province injured 70 people, some seriously.
Balochistan Police Chief Abdul Khaliq Sheikh confirmed to the online portal that the blast was a suicide attack. He also announced that a senior police officer who tried to stop the attacker was killed.
The Pakistani Ministry of Interior called it a “heinous act”. At the time of the explosion, people were gathering for a procession to mark the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed, the ministry said. It blamed “terrorist elements” for the crime.
As the BBC reports, another bombing reportedly took place at a mosque near the city of Peshawar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province during the same period. According to police, two people were killed and fifteen others were injured. According to the BBC, police believe that several people may be buried under a collapsed roof. The mosque is also part of a police complex and has a capacity for about 40 to 50 people. (AFP/SDA/Ms)
