The Mannheim Regional Court (D) has sentenced a 73-year-old to three years in prison for the attempted murder of a corona patient. According to the judges, the woman turned off the oxygen machine of an elderly fellow patient last November, according to the verdict handed down on Thursday evening. The reason for this was that she was bothered by the alarm sound of the device. Both women were housed in one room.
The elderly fellow patient was dependent on an oxygen machine due to her serious corona infection. After removing the face mask several times and nurses turning off the loud alarm sound that was then sounding, the 73-year-old turned off the oxygen machine to prevent further disruptions.
The department noted that the device was turned off. The woman admitted to doctors that she turned it off so she could sleep. According to the court, she had been made aware of the danger to the life of her fellow patient.
That same evening she turned off the oxygen machine again. Although she noticed that this was causing her fellow patient significant breathing problems, she did not turn on the machine or call the staff. At around 9:25 p.m. it was noticed that the device had been turned off. At that point, the fellow patient became unresponsive and had to be transferred to the intensive care unit.
About two and a half weeks after this incident, the woman died due to multiple organ failure. According to the court, switching off the oxygen machine was not the cause. The Public Prosecution Service had charged the woman with attempted murder. However, during the course of the trial she withdrew from this accusation. (SDA)
