In Japan, a zookeeper was apparently attacked and fatally injured by a lion. The 53-year-old man was found unconscious and with a bleeding wound on his neck in the lion cage at the Tohoku Safari Park in northeastern Japan’s Fukushima region on Thursday, a police spokesman told AFP. Researchers believe he was attacked by a lion while eating.
The safari park’s deputy director told reporters that the guard tried to lure a lion into the cage with food and left a door unlocked. Normally the door is only opened briefly to place the food. Once the food is in place, the door is closed and locked, Norichika Kumakubo said. In this case the door remained open.
According to media reports, the zookeeper had extensive experience dealing with large predators such as lions, tigers and bears. Kumakubo expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased. The park is taking the incident “very seriously” and will take measures to prevent similar accidents in the future. The safari park will remain closed until the new safety measures are in place.
