Another flood after a storm in Greece. IT disruption paralyzes production at VW in Germany

Storms again caused flooding, power outages and closed roads in parts of Greece on Wednesday. Deep “Elias” included heavy rainfall on the island of Euboea. There, rain washed so much red mud into the sea near the northwestern town of Limni that the bay glowed red, as images in the Greek media showed. In the town of Mantoudi in the northeast of the island, people had to flee to the top floors of their homes as water flooded the streets up to their waists.

The central Greek city of Larisa and parts of the foothills of the Pelion Mountains were again hit by the storms. The situation there is particularly tense because the region was only flooded by the storm “Daniel” at the beginning of September. The village of Sotirio near Larisa was evacuated as a precaution on Wednesday afternoon. There were also flooded streets in the port city of Volos. In many places there was a power outage and roads were closed.

Storm “Daniel” flooded large parts of the central Greek region of Thessaly at the beginning of September – the damage is far from repaired. 15 people were killed and entire regions were without electricity and drinking water for a week or more. There was also a temporary risk of an epidemic as thousands of farm animals died. (sda/dpa)
