Cruel regime: Russia puts Navalny in solitary confinement for a year

The prison camp management had informed him that he would be placed in solitary confinement for a whole year, Alexei Navalny, 47, said on Wednesday through his team on social networks. The 47-year-old said this is “the highest possible punishment” in the Russian prison system.

On Tuesday, a Russian appeals court upheld Navalny’s sentence to a total of 19 years in prison for alleged extremism. Internationally, Navalny is seen as a political prisoner, and his sentence has been criticized as a directive from the Kremlin to an obedient judiciary.

Already locked up in solitary cells twenty times

The prominent critic of President Vladimir Putin was jailed in 2021 and is now in a prison camp about 160 miles from Moscow. According to his own statements, he has been locked up in an solitary cell for several days twenty times in recent months. His supporters are convinced that the Russian state apparatus wants to torture Navalny in this way, break his resistance and use him as a deterrent example to other government critics.

Human rights activists also repeatedly point to the poor health of Navalny, who narrowly survived a nerve agent attack in the summer of 2020. Navalny accuses Russia’s domestic secret service FSB and Putin of being behind the assassination attempt. The Kremlin denies this.
