In Glasgow: Britain’s first drug consumption chamber gets approval

This was decided by a panel of medical experts and local politicians in Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow, on Wednesday, British media report.

Even hard drugs such as heroin and cocaine will in future be allowed to be consumed with impunity in the planned area in the east of Glasgow. The aim is to provide addicts with a hygienic and medically controlled environment for injecting drugs that would otherwise be consumed on the street. The move was made possible by Scotland’s top prosecutor announcing that she would not sanction drug use there.

The aim is to reduce the risk of infections and other hazards, including those to bystanders from syringes lying around, the PA news agency said in an expert report. It is estimated that there are between 400 and 500 people who regularly inject drugs in the center of Glasgow.

In the British part of Scotland, with 5.4 million inhabitants, 1,051 people died last year as a result of drug use. By comparison, in Germany only twice as many people died in the same period out of a population of more than 84 million people – and this value is already considered alarmingly high.

Drug rooms have been allowed in Germany for more than twenty years. Whether they are established depends on the respective federal states. According to Deutsche Aidshilfe, thousands of lives have already been saved with their help due to the rapid intervention of employees in the event of overdoses.
