The shepherd did not expect this: a flock of sheep in Greece broke into a greenhouse and ate more than 100 kilos of cannabis. This is reported by the Greek news portal “TheNewspaper.gr”.

According to the report, the case took place near Almyros in the Thessaly region. The shepherd of the flock noticed ‘strange behavior’ in the animals. Accordingly, the animals would have turned their heads unnaturally. He then started looking for the cause. He discovered that the herd had ‘invaded’ a greenhouse where medicinal cannabis was being grown in search of food.

The owner of the facility reported the matter in disbelief: “I don’t know whether to laugh or cry,” he told the news portal. “We had a heat wave and lost a lot of production. We’ve had floods and lost almost everything. And now this: After all this, a flock of sheep entered the facility, I don’t know how they got there, and started eating what was left. I don’t know what to say, to be honest.”

The case illustrates the problems Greece is facing as a result of this summer’s extreme weather. The country has been hit by several heat waves in recent months with temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius and persistent drought. There were also forest fires in various parts of the country.

At the beginning of September unprecedented amounts of rain fell, especially in central Greece. Within two to three days, as much precipitation fell in some places as the German annual average. Seventeen people died in Thessaly alone.

The extreme weather has hit Greek agriculture particularly hard. The region of Thessaly is considered the breadbasket of Greece. According to the news portal “Greek Reporter”, hundreds of thousands of animals are said to have died as a result of the floods there and in other regions in the center of the country. In addition, crops and pastures were destroyed.

The latter poses a lasting threat to livestock farming. “If there is no immediate help with animal feed, the animals that survived the disaster will starve,” warned the mayor of Tyrnavos municipality, Yianis Kokouras. Hunger probably also drove the sheep of Almyros to invade the cannabis plantation.
