Italy said goodbye to Giorgio Napolitano on Tuesday.

Italy said goodbye to former president Giorgio Napolitano (1925-2023) with a state funeral.

Top politicians from home and abroad and relatives of the former head of state took part in the funeral service in the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament in Rome on Tuesday. Italy’s incumbent President Sergio Mattarella (82), Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni (46) and their ministers were part of the mourners. French President Emmanuel Macron (45) also paid his last respects to Napolitano.

Napolitano’s 88-year-old widow Clio received guests in a wheelchair in front of her husband’s coffin at the Palazzo Montecitorio. Napolitano, who was in power in Italy for more than eight and a half years between 2006 and 2015, longer than anyone else, died last Friday at the age of 98. The funeral service for the former communist took place as he requested in the form of a non-religious ceremony.

“He couldn’t handle insults”

Napolitano’s son Giulio and granddaughter Sofia said goodbye to the ex-president in sometimes emotional speeches. They honored his political work. “He couldn’t stand demagoguery, shouting and insults,” Giulio said.

Numerous people watched the funeral service on large screens in the square in front of the seat of the Chamber of Deputies. As the coffin was carried into the palace, they applauded. (SDA)
