Following violent unrest on the border with the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army attacked a military post of the ruling Islamist Hamas for the fourth day in a row. The army said Monday evening that the post was located near the riots, where shots were fired at Israeli soldiers.
In addition, the army arrested two suspects who allegedly attempted to cross the border from the Gaza Strip into Israel. The two were therefore handed over to the security forces for questioning.
There has been unrest on the border with Gaza almost every day for almost two weeks, fueling fears of a new major conflict. During the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which started on Sunday evening and ended on Monday evening, border crossings into the Gaza Strip and the West Bank were completely closed for security reasons. The Israeli army says it has increased its forces at the border.
According to the UN, more than two million people live in very poor conditions in the Gaza Strip. Hamas, classified as a terrorist organization by the EU, the US and Israel, seized exclusive power by force in 2007. Israel subsequently tightened the blockade of the coastal area, which Egypt supported. (sda/dpa)
