It was a devastating rocket attack. On Friday, Ukraine attacked the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet on the Russia-annexed Crimean Peninsula. International observers wondered: how was this possible? Reports of Russian officers allegedly helping Ukraine in the attack quickly multiplied. According to Ukrainian partisans working with the official Ukrainian armed forces, a lack of wage payments from the Kremlin facilitated recruitment efforts.
The Ukrainian partisan group in Crimea told the Kiev Post that they had received information from Russian officers about the whereabouts of key Russian commanders. In return, they received financial rewards from the Ukrainians. Moscow has failed to pay its marines their wages on time.
With knowledge of Russian activities, it was much easier for Ukraine to plan the devastating attack.
The partisan group’s spokesperson also admitted: “Delays in payments alone do not convince officers to take action against their own authorities.” They are also convinced that their country is waging a criminal war that must be stopped. “Financial contributions obviously help with the collaboration.” The spokesperson explained that they would act as an additional incentive.
The Ukrainian did not reveal how much money had been paid out, but it would be enough to cover the needs “for the officers and their families.” The identities of the ‘assisting officers’ were also not disclosed. The partisan group only announced that it was working with Russians who have good knowledge of the general activities of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
Friday’s attack was a major military and symbolic blow to Russia – and if the casualty figures are confirmed, the attack will also cause great physical loss. The attack killed nine people and seriously injured many more, according to the head of Ukraine’s defense intelligence service. The seriously injured also include Aleksandr Romanchuk, commander of the Russian forces on the Zaporizhia Front, and Lieutenant Oleg Tsekov, commander of the 200th Motor Rifle Brigade of the Russian Navy’s Northern Fleet.
Defense Intelligence confirmed cooperation with the partisans to the Kiev Post. The group plays a crucial role in the fight against the enemy in Crimea, the authority’s spokesman said. Nevertheless, the situation for the partisans in Crimea remains high risk, as the area is still occupied by the Russians.
However, the spokesperson for the partisan group remains optimistic: “We have ears and eyes, both inside and outside. “So we are the first to see and hear what is happening there.” (An)
