Nazi scandal in Bauzen in the German state of Saxony: the Wehrmacht march “Erika” suddenly sounds loudly from the loudspeakers at the Oktoberfest. Many festival tent visitors sing along loudly to the song, which was composed by the most important bandmaster of the Reichsmusikzug, NSDAP member Herms Niel. The lyrics of the song are still not banned today – unlike the Hitler salute.

The accompanying video on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, is only 16 seconds long. But that’s enough for a few disturbing images: a man first raises his beer mug in the air, then puts it down and raises his right arm instead.

Another man gives the Hitler salute no fewer than fourteen times. The blonde woman opposite raises her right arm seven times, a third man six times.

No more Wehrmacht music in the future

The video has been circulating on X since Sunday evening. The Görlitz police received the report on Monday morning. “We are investigating the initial suspicion of using the symbols of unconstitutional organizations. State security will be involved in the investigation,” police spokesman Marcel Malchow told the newspaper ‘Bild’.

“We clearly distance ourselves from such visitors, we just want to celebrate a normal Oktoberfest,” said organizer Matthias Braune of the newspaper ‘Bild’. Wehrmacht marches will no longer be heard at the festival in the future. (gs)
