Thousands of people have protested in Spain against a possible amnesty for Catalan separatists. The demonstrators followed the call of opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s conservative People’s Party (PP) and gathered in Madrid’s Felipe II Square on Sunday. The background is that the Socialists (PSOE) of acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez are considering supporting the separatists. in exchange for offering support in government formation and amnesty.
According to the PP, more than 30,000 people took part in the protest – including Feijóo, ex-prime ministers Mariano Rajoy and José María Aznar. They complained, among other things, that the planned amnesty was unconstitutional and a violation of the rule of law. At an event in the Catalan town of Pineda de Gavà near Barcelona, Sánchez, who has been in power since 2018, responded that the PP was only against a continuation of the left-wing government. “I’m sorry, but there will be a socialist government,” he said.

The meeting took place just three days before the vote in the House of Representatives on Feijóo’s candidacy for prime minister. Since Feijóo will most likely fail in his application, the PP is already focusing on Sánchez’s next attempt, which is considered certain.
Sánchez’s PSOE only came second to the PP in the parliamentary elections at the end of July. However, as neither has had sufficient support from other parties to form a majority capable of governing, King Felipe VI. decided that the election winner would register first.
Sánchez gets more chances than Feijóo. In addition to the votes of the left-wing Sumar alliance and smaller regional parties, he would also need agreements with the left-wing ERC of Catalan Prime Minister Pere Aragonès and the liberal Junts party of separatist leader and fugitive Spanish justice Carles Puigdemont. who lives in exile in Belgium. Both want Catalan independence. To support Sánchez, they demand, among other things, amnesty for the ‘Catalanistas’ who participated in the failed secession attempt in 2017. (cst/sda/dpa)
