Volcanic activity in the Phlegraean Fields (Campi Flegrei), not far from Naples, has increased dramatically.

Is there a risk of a mega-eruption in Italy? At least that’s what experts fear. However, we are not talking about Etna, Vesuvius or Stromboli.

On the contrary, the Phlegraean Fields (Campi Flegrei), not far from Naples, an area of high volcanic activity, are likely to become a problem. Merkur, among others, reports on this. The Phlegraean Fields, classified as a supervolcano, are located 20 kilometers west of Mount Vesuvius and cover an area of more than 150 square kilometers.

50 earthquakes in one day

In a new study, researchers from University College London and the National Research Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy conclude that the Phlegraean fields have become weaker and more prone to cracking. This makes an eruption and therefore a huge explosion more likely.

“Our new research confirms that the Campi Flegrei are moving closer to an eruption,” lead author Christopher Kilburn explained in a statement. The already high volcanic activity in the area is said to have increased. According to the report, the ground shook fifty times on Friday alone.

In total, the ground in the region near Naples shook 2,435 times this year. By comparison, in 2017, authorities recorded only 120 tremors.

The earthquakes also leave their mark on the residents. Not only do they have to deal with the smell of rotten eggs, but they are also constantly woken up by loud noises.

The outbreak could be ten times stronger than Pompeii

Italian volcanologist Giuseppe Mastrolorenzo goes one step further: the situation could be worse than expected.

It is entirely possible that the earthquakes are a harbinger of a larger super-eruption. But that’s not all: according to the researcher, such an eruption would be ten times as strong as the eruption of Mount Vesuvius above Pompeii in 79 BC. B.C

Mastrolorenzo therefore calls for better rescue plans. The researcher complains that there is currently no idea how residents would be evacuated in the event of an eruption. (dzc)
