One-year-old Nicholas lost his life because fentanyl was in a crib in New York. He died of an overdose. Three other small children also came into contact with the drug and are now in hospital with poisoning. ABC News reports this, citing local police.

The victims were children aged 8 months and 2 years. An analysis of the urine of one of the children confirmed the presence of the substance, officials said.

Fetanyl is a man-made opioid used to treat severe or chronic pain that cannot be treated with other painkillers. The effect is up to 100 times stronger than morphine and 50 times stronger than heroin.

Drugs were hidden in a hatch in the floor

As people familiar with the case told the news portal, officers discovered the drug through a hatch in the floor. Unbelievable: The hiding place was in the middle of the daycare playroom.

During the search on Wednesday and Thursday this week, officers also seized other narcotics and drug paraphernalia. Officials became aware of the daycare through a tip from the public.

Childcare operator and tenant charged

According to court documents, investigators had previously found a kilogram of fentanyl stored on children’s play mats. There they also discovered a device for compressing medicines for sale.

The daycare center operator, Grei M.*, and her tenant, Carlisto B.*, have now been arrested by officials and indicted by a jury. They are suspected of possessing narcotics and distributing them.

They must also be held accountable for the death of the small child and endangering other children. They are currently being held without bail. The state trial is scheduled for Oct. 5.

According to M’s lawyer, she did not know that B., her husband’s cousin, to whom she rented a room for 200 dollars a week, was hiding drugs in her crib. It is unclear where her husband is. However, court records show that police are also looking for him. This after a suspicious video of him surfaced. Images show how he fled the daycare center with two garbage bags. (dzc)
