The death of Mahsa Amini sparked a protest movement in Iran.

The three largest political groups in the European Parliament nominated her on Wednesday for the prestigious Sakharov Prize for Human Rights. American entrepreneur Elon Musk is also on the list.

22-year-old Amini died on September 16, 2022 after he was arrested by the Iranian moral police for wearing a headscarf that was too loose. Her death sparked an unprecedented protest movement.

The award for Amini receives the support of the European People’s Party (EPP), which also includes the CDU and CSU. Social Democrats and liberals are also in favor of the honor. There is a good chance that she will receive the prize posthumously in December.

American entrepreneur Elon Musk is also on the list of nominees. The proposal comes from the right-wing extremist group Identity and Democracy (ID), to which the AfD belongs. Last year, Musk bought the online platform Twitter, now called X. He presents himself as an advocate of free speech.

Announced in October

For 35 years, the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought has been awarded to individuals or organizations that promote human rights and freedom of expression. An amount of 50,000 euros has been allocated. In October, the European Parliament wants to announce who will be honored this year.

Last year the Ukrainian people received the Sakharov Prize. The European Parliament justified this with the courage of the people in the Russian war of aggression.
