Protest against new labor law: strikes in Greece block ferry traffic

Another strike at the port of Piraeus: Greek unions protest against planned changes to labor law. This limits ferry traffic. (archive image)

The seafarers’ union said there will be no voyages from Piraeus to the islands. Air traffic was normal. Union meetings were scheduled around lunchtime.

There were also severe restrictions on local transport. Employees lay silent there for several hours, reports Greek broadcaster ERT. State employees, including teachers, have also joined the strike, their union said.

The conservative government led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis plans to relax labor laws. Working hours will be made more flexible, among other things. For the first time, there will be ‘on-call employment’ – if necessary, the employer can call the employee at least 24 hours before the start of work.

In the future, employees could also be required to work on Saturdays or Sundays and receive an extra 40 percent of their daily wages for this sixth working day. In addition, in addition to the regular eight hours, it should be allowed to take a second job with one employer and work another five hours a day for another. The unions criticize the weakening of the eight-hour day and the five-day working week.
