Meloni has been at the head of a coalition of right-wing parties for almost a year. Combating illegal migration was one of her most important promises during the election campaign. According to the Interior Ministry, around 130,000 migrants have arrived in Italy by sea since the beginning of the year – almost twice as many as in the same period last year.
