Shortly after his appearance at the UN Security Council, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky left. He entered the commission’s chamber in New York on Wednesday, shortly after the meeting began at 11:10 a.m. (New York time), and then delivered a 15-minute speech following UN Secretary General António Guterres’ speech. At 11:56 a.m. (New York time), Zelensky, wearing an olive green long-sleeved shirt, left the room and with him the current meeting.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov initially stayed away from the long-awaited meeting. Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya initially took part Wednesday at the New York seat of Moscow’s representative, who failed at the start of the meeting in an attempt to stop Zelensky from making an early speech. According to information from the DPA, Lavrov is expected to deliver the speech before his country.
The United Nations’ most powerful body met on the sidelines of the general debate in the UN General Assembly. In addition to a summit meeting with a number of heads of state and government and foreign ministers, there was eager anticipation of whether Zelensky would meet Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov for the first time since the start of the war.
