Even after Prigozhin’s death, Wagner’s company remains Russia’s outpost in Africa

The Wagner mercenaries are still present in Africa.

A few weeks ago, Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin (†62) died in a mysterious plane crash. However, the empire in Africa that the man nicknamed ‘Putin’s chief’ built for himself lives on – especially in Africa.

As “CNN” reports, the mercenary group still has a local presence and its influence is enormous – especially in the Central African Republic. This is especially noticeable in cultural centers such as the Maison Russe, also known as the Russian House. Just a few weeks before the fatal accident on August 23 this year, the Wagner boss and his entourage visited the facility.

“Brainwashing” in Central Africa

As an on-site inspection shows, the Kremlin is doing everything it can to continue Wagner’s operations in Africa and further assert their influence on the ground.

Everything must remain as it is – and the report says this is hard to miss, especially in the Central African Republic. Locals drink Wa-Na-Wa vodka made by a Wagner-affiliated company, Russian fighter jets thunder through the sky and the Russian tricolor flies above the cultural center.

“The Maison Russe is the nerve center for all of Wagner’s activities in the Central African Republic,” Nathalia Dukhan, a senior researcher at The Sentry, a US nonprofit that monitors Wagner across the country, told CNN.

The center is the scene of a number of activities related to Wagner’s business ventures. Not only would VIPs be kept happy there, but gold and diamonds would also be sold there. Furthermore, “the events spread Russian culture and promote a pro-Moscow perspective on international relations.”

Prigozhin’s death does not change the mission

According to All Eyes on Wagner, an open source initiative that tracks the group, this is a prime example of how the Wagner Group is the outpost of the Russian state in Africa.

According to Anfisa Alexandrovna Kiryanova, the new director of the Russian House, Prigozhin’s death has not changed anything. The Russian mission in the Central African Republic remains the same. “Does it change anything if, I don’t know, the president of your country dies? Does this mean that their country will cease to exist? The Russian cultural mission continues,” Kiryanova said.

The Wagner group has been active in the Central African Republic since at least 2018 to protect President Faustin-Archange Touadera (66) and train army recruits. Moreover, its operations allowed Russia to expand its wealth of mineral resources many times over. (dzc)
