In the South Caucasus, the former Soviet republic of Azerbaijan has launched a new military operation to capture the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone. The Ministry of Defense in Baku spoke on Tuesday of an “anti-terror operation of a local character to restore constitutional order” in the region.
According to an AFP reporter, explosions were heard in Stepanakert, the capital of the disputed region. Sirens and gunshots could also be heard on video.

In recent months, concerns have increased among international observers that the conflict between the two countries could escalate. Azerbaijan blocked the so-called Lachin corridor – the only route through which food, medicine and relief supplies can reach Nagorno-Karabakh.
