“I can announce to you that we will convene a meeting of foreign ministers in Kiev,” the Spaniard said on Monday evening (local time) after an EU meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

According to information from EU circles, the meeting, which is particularly important symbolically, could be organized in the first week of October. However, Borrell initially did not want to confirm this. “Allow me to keep the exact date a secret,” he said.

For German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, the appointment would be the second in Kiev in a matter of weeks. The Green Party politician was only in the Ukrainian capital on September 11.

Borrell mentioned a topic for the EU’s planned meeting with his proposal to make longer-term financial commitments for military aid to Ukraine and to use EU money to support the supply of modern fighter jets and missiles. He wants to mobilize five billion euros annually from 2024 to the end of 2027.

Moreover, it is likely to be at least marginally about Ukraine’s EU accession prospects. The country has been an official candidate for membership since June. However, the 27 EU countries must still decide unanimously whether or not to start negotiations.
