“He doesn’t cry, he doesn’t laugh and he doesn’t speak”: Italian media reported the little boy who arrived alone on a ferry at Lampedusa’s Favarolo pier last Friday. It is unclear where the child comes from, what his name is or what he has experienced. The boy’s age cannot even be confirmed, but he is believed to be around three years old. A fate that currently affects many people in Italy.
The little one was not completely alone when he arrived on the island in the Mediterranean Sea. A teenager held his hand as they entered Italy. He later told authorities that he discovered the boy alone in the desert. “I couldn’t let him die alone in the desert, so I took him with me and we went together,” the migrant said in Italian media. “But he is not part of my family and I don’t know how to take care of him.” The child never spoke a word to his companion during their time together.
Volunteers and psychologists from the Red Cross and the aid organization Save the Children are now caring for the boy. They’re trying to get him to talk, but so far they’ve had no success. “It’s as if he lives in his own world and doesn’t want to leave it,” an aid worker said on Italian television.
Giovanna Di Benedetto, spokeswoman for Save The Children, told Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera: “We still know nothing about the child and it will not be easy to trace his past in such a sensitive context.” The boy is not an isolated case, Di Benedetto said. “In recent years we have seen a steady increase in the arrival of unaccompanied minors, and increasingly they are under the age of ten.”
The juvenile court in Palermo is expected to decide the boy’s fate within hours. The goal is to get him out of the first shelter “Imbriacola” as quickly as possible. If no surviving relatives come forward, the court will appoint a guardian.
“The little one is under severe emotional stress and cannot express himself verbally,” Claudia Caramanna, the prosecutor for minors in Palermo, told Italian news channel Rai News 24. If necessary, “urgent intervention from the child neuropsychiatry department is also planned.” ” According to media reports, several families from Lampedusa came forward and offered temporary care for the boy.
In recent days, several thousand migrants have landed in Lampedusa by boat from North Africa. With immediate effect, Italy has decided on a package of stricter measures to curb irregular migration across the Mediterranean, including a tightening of detention pending deportation.
Last Tuesday alone, more than 5,000 people arrived on the small island between Sicily and North Africa – more than ever before in one day. Thousands were then taken to Sicily or mainland Italy by ferries and police ships. According to the Ansa news agency, about 1,300 people remain in the island’s camp.
