UN on fatalities after storms in Libya: About ten percent are migrants Escalation on Lampedusa: This is how the migration crisis arose

According to the UN Organization for Migration (IOM), about ten percent of the identified fatalities in the Libya flood disaster were migrants. The organization announced this on the online platform The IOM assumes that there were approximately 400 migrants among them. This number is likely to change as more bodies are recovered.

The migrants found dead were reportedly from Egypt, Sudan and Bangladesh. There are hundreds of thousands of migrants in Libya. Some live and work in the North African country for a long time, while others use it as a transit country to reach Europe. The IOM and WHO report that the number of confirmed deaths is similarly high. The government in the stricken east of Libya estimated the number of officially registered deaths at 3,338 on Monday evening.

Before the floods, thousands of migrants lived in the particularly badly damaged port city of Darna. The IOM assumes that the death toll among migrants will be particularly high because they settled in very low-lying areas, the organization told the British broadcaster BBC. (sda/dpa)
