Driving lifelong dream – a Canadian couple built this island paradise themselves.

Isolated in pristine Canadian nature: the island of Freedom Cove, “Bay of Freedom”, can only be reached by boat – and the realization of the lifelong dream of Catherine King and Wayne Adams. 32 years ago, the married artist couple started building their own floating paradise island. They grow their own food and store it immediately. The world outside? They hardly need it.

The lifelong dream on the coast of Vancouver Island in western Canada has so far cost about R1.1 million. One of the houses even has a hatch in the wooden floor with an opening to the water. Ideal for fishing. Adams never fishes there seriously. He would rather not disturb the schools of fish that have settled beneath his anchored property.

The facility is constantly being renovated and expanded – and repaired when another storm hits the area. The artificial island is powered by solar energy, generators and a freshwater system designed by Adams.

“Landsick” on the land

The two go ashore every two weeks – just long enough so that they don’t get ‘land sick’. Your dream island now includes gardens, greenhouses, a dance floor, a boat garage, seating and living areas, art and work spaces – and even its own art gallery.

The project started with a small floating house built from wood washed ashore after a storm – and some old fishing equipment.

“When we started, the first thing we had to do was obviously have a roof over our heads,” King told the YouTube channel Florb. “So we built the house, which was half the size it is now.” Over the course of more than twenty years, new buildings and facilities were gradually added.

Don’t want another life

They spend most of their time on complex maintenance. Despite the many hardships, they do not want to avoid all risks and difficulties, they say to the tourists they regularly receive in Freedom Cove.

The couple says they don’t want to trade their home with anyone. “I can’t imagine,” says King, “living any other way. Our dream is to live here until the end of our days.” (kes)
