The US military is said to have found the wreckage of the plane during the search for a missing F-35 fighter jet. Joint Base Charleston announced on Monday evening (local time) that they were in Williamsburg County, South Carolina.
The plane was lost in an “accident” on Sunday afternoon (local time), the army said. During a training mission, the pilot had to eject due to a “glitch”. While the pilot landed shortly afterwards in a garden in a Charleston suburb, the plane continued to fly – on autopilot, which the US Department of Defense said had been activated. The pilot himself was treated in hospital.
After the incident, politicians began to criticize the military. “How the heck do you lose an F-35?” writes Republican Rep. Nancy Mace In response, Joint Base Charleston spokesman Jeremy Huggins told the Washington Post that the tracking device was not working “for unknown reasons.”
Now that I’ve got that out of the way. How the heck do you lose an F-35?
Why is there no tracking device and we ask the public what: find a plane and return it?

Meanwhile, people on X were joking about the accident. Among other things, images of fake eBay ads circulating advertised the plane for $80 million. Photo montages have also been created showing the F-35 on a missing persons report, as usually happens with wanted pets.

Imagine losing an F-35, supposedly the most advanced fighter in the world, and calling it an “accident.” pic.twitter.com/PObzwCtINX

The suspected found F-35B Lightning II is a version of the jet that can take off and land vertically thanks to a running engine. The F-35 is considered the most advanced fighter plane in the world, but it also has problems. The U.S. Audit Office listed nearly 800 defects in the machines in a 2020 report. Switzerland will receive fighter jets of this type in 2027 – albeit the F-35A model. It was recently announced that it must maintain a safety distance of 40 kilometers from thunderstorm cells.
