The increasing aging of society poses a major challenge for the Japanese government.

More than ten percent of people in Japan are 80 years or older. Data released by the Japanese government ahead of Respect for Age Day on Monday also shows that the share of people aged 65 or over rose to a new record of 29.1 percent, up from 29 percent a year ago.

“Japan has the highest percentage of elderly people in the world,” the Ministry of Home Affairs said. Italy is in second place with 24.5 percent and Finland in third place with 23.6 percent.

Baby boomers are getting older

The increasing aging of society poses a major challenge for the Japanese government to ensure that the growing number of retirees and dependents can be cared for, despite the declining number of people who can work.

According to information, the problem will become even worse as the baby boom generation now ages. As the Ministry of the Interior announced, 20 million of Japan’s 124 million people are now 75 years or older. According to the information, almost 12.6 million Japanese are 80 years or older.
