“Girls belong at school,” UN Secretary General António Guterres wrote on the X platform, formerly Twitter, on Monday. “Let them back in.” He called the closure of girls’ schools from seventh grade an “unjustified violation of human rights that will cause long-term damage to the entire country.”

The human rights organization Amnesty International also called on the Islamists to immediately reopen schools. The future and dreams of thousands of Afghan girls are at stake, the organization writes on X.

The Islamic Taliban have returned to power in Afghanistan since August 2021. Since then, they have severely limited the rights of women and girls, especially in education. Girls are only allowed to attend school until the sixth grade and are no longer allowed to attend universities.

Afghanistan is the only country in the world with restrictions on female education. The Taliban explain this by saying that this is not compatible with their interpretation of Islamic law, Sharia. The ban sparked condemnation around the world. It is still seen as the biggest obstacle to international recognition of their government.
