The Pope asks for the protection of human dignity in the face of the phenomenon of migration

Pope Francis asked today to protect “human dignity” in the face of the “migration phenomenon”, after a week in which the arrival of thousands of people on Italian shores put the world’s focus on migration to Europe via the Mediterranean.

“It is not an easy challenge, as the news of the last days shows, but one that we must face together, because it is necessary for the future of all, which will be prosperous only if it is built on the foundations of brotherhood,” the Pope asked after the Sunday prayer Angel of the Lord on St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.

Francis insisted that “human dignity and certain people, especially those most in need” must be prioritized above all measures.

He also reminded that on his next trip to the French city of Marseille (south), on September 22 and 23, church and civil leaders will promote “paths of peace, cooperation and integration” with special reference to the phenomenon of migration.

Francis’ Mass in Marseille, which will be attended by French President Emmanuel Macron, will be the central event of the ‘Mediterranean Reunions’ initiative, which will welcome the city “rich in people and called to be a port of hope”.

His words about the migration phenomenon coincided with the visit of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to the Italian island of Lampedusa (south), the epicenter of the Mediterranean migration crisis.

Last August, Pope Francis condemned that “almost 2,000 men, women and children have already died since the beginning of the year” trying to reach Europe by crossing the Mediterranean Sea and called for “political and diplomatic efforts” to avoid new tragedies like the previous 1st shipwreck in which “41 people lost their lives”.

“It is with pain and shame that we have to say that since the beginning of the year, almost 2,000 men, women and children have died at sea trying to reach Europe, an open wound in our humanity,” the Pope warned after the Sunday Angelus prayer.
