Nine people were slightly injured in a collision between two roller coaster carriages at the Oktoberfest in Munich. Police said on Sunday that they were treated as an outpatient by the medical service after Saturday evening’s accident. The police closed the ride. The cause requires further investigation. An expert should also be consulted.
It is completely unclear why the accident happened. Like all rides at the Oktoberfest, the ride was thoroughly inspected by the TÜV before the start.
The accident occurred on the first day of Oktoberfest, shortly after 10 p.m., about twelve hours after the ticking, marking the official start of the festival.
The injured were examined very thoroughly, said Michel Belcijan, operations manager of the Aicher Ambulance. They mainly suffered bruises. Three patients were taken to hospital for further examination. It was initially not entirely clear whether this actually happened. Accidents on fairground rides are common, but mainly because passengers trip – often after drinking alcohol.
A train on the family roller coaster “Höllenblitz” was stationary when the approaching train slowly rolled back after 10:10 p.m. for unknown reasons. On Saturday evening, the director of “Höllenblitz”, Willi Ottens, reported to the German news agency Zondag. Each of the trains was occupied by approximately 30 people.
“There was a slight collision between the two trains, everyone got out independently,” said Ottens. All people were secured with irons. Initially, no injuries were noticed when they got out.
“There was clearly a technical defect in the system. We are clarifying the matter,” said Ottens. The TÜV is expected tomorrow morning. It was bad for him: all precautions had been taken in advance. According to Ottens, the “Höllenblitz” is the largest traveling indoor roller coaster in the world. (sda/dpa)
