Following the devastating floods in Libya, the death toll in the coastal city of Darna has risen to 11,300, according to the UN. About 10,100 people from the devastated city in the east of the crisis country are still missing, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Aid (OCHA) said on Saturday (local time).
Storm “Daniel” caused serious flooding in eastern Libya last Sunday. The city of Darna was particularly hard hit when two river dams burst there. Outside Darna, the UN counted another 170 dead.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recently stated that the bodies of 3,958 people have been recovered and identified in the disaster area. 9,000 people are still missing. The health minister in the government in eastern Libya, Othman Abdeljalil, spoke on Saturday of at least 3,166 deaths.
Countless people were swept into the Mediterranean during the floods. Due to the enormous damage and chaotic conditions in Darna, the risk of an epidemic is growing. “In conditions like these, diseases can spread quickly because water systems are contaminated,” the Islamic Relief charity warned
