Son of Mexican drug lord ‘El Chapo’ extradited to the US AfD is clearly the second strongest force in Germany according to surveys

The son of Mexican drug lord Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, who was imprisoned in the United States, has been extradited to the US. The transfer of 33-year-old Ovidio Guzmán was the result of cooperation between Mexico and the US in the fight against drug cartels, US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on Friday (local time).

Ovidio Guzmán was arrested in January in Culiacán in the northwestern state of Sinaloa. The son of ‘El Chapo’ is accused in the United States of several crimes, including drug trafficking, organized crime and money laundering, as one of the leaders of the infamous Sinaloa cartel.

Fight cartel

The extradition is the latest step in the Justice Department’s efforts to combat all cartel activity, Garland said. The Department will continue to hold accountable those responsible for the opioid epidemic in the United States. According to the CDC, the painkiller crisis in the United States has led to nearly half a million deaths over the past two decades.

‘El Chapo’s’ wife Emma Coronel (34) only left prison on Wednesday after serving barely more than half her sentence in the US. Ovidio Guzmán’s father was one of the most powerful drug traffickers in the world until his arrest. He managed to escape from prison several times until he was extradited to the US after his last arrest in 2016 and sentenced to life imprisonment there in 2019. His sons then took over part of their father’s drug trade.

After Ovidio Guzmán’s arrest, gang members blocked numerous streets with burning cars and fought fierce battles with police and military. According to the Ministry of Defense, 29 people were killed in the shooting. (sda/dpa)
