Group of Developing Countries: G77 Summit Begins in Cuba Baerbock Confronted Fox News: That’s not a bad decision

A summit of the Group of 77, an association of developing countries and China within the United Nations, has begun in the Cuban capital Havana. For two days, representatives of more than 100 countries and UN organizations will exchange ideas on the topic “Current challenges for development: role of science, technology and innovation”.

UN Secretary General António Guterres, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and the presidents of Argentina and Venezuela, Alberto Fernández and Nicolás Maduro, were among others represented at the opening Friday in the socialist Caribbean state. The G77 is a group of 134 developing countries founded in 1964. China is involved without being an official member. Cuba currently holds the annual rotating presidency.

In an opening speech, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel apologized to participants for the shortcomings they would find at the summit in Cuba. They are the result of the US ‘blockade’ – the embargo – that has lasted for more than sixty years. The goal of the G77 group is to change the unfair world order and reduce barriers for developing countries, for example when it comes to access to knowledge. (sda/dpa)
