Two people were killed near Rome in an accident involving a bus carrying migrants that landed on the Italian island of Lampedusa in the Mediterranean Sea a few days ago.
The bus collided head-on with another vehicle on the highway on Friday morning, Ansa and Adnkronos news agencies reported, citing traffic police. According to the information, the dead were the drivers of the two vehicles. According to Ansa, 25 migrants were injured, some seriously.
The bus drove from the Sicilian coastal town of Porto Empedocle towards Piedmont to take people to reception centers on the Italian mainland. The first reception center on the small island of Lampedusa is overcrowded after the arrival of thousands of migrants in recent days.
The injured were taken to nearby hospitals. The exact circumstances of the collision were initially unclear. (rbu/sda/dpa)
