On Tuesday, Spanish reporter Isa Balado reported live on a theft in Madrid for the TV channel ‘Cuatro’. While she was talking about the incident on camera, an unknown man approached from behind. What happened next is hard to believe. The man simply grabbed the reporter’s buttocks. He then interrupted her conversation to ask what station she worked for.
The visibly perplexed reporter then gently pushed him aside and continued her work as if nothing had happened. But TV presenter Nacho Abad left the studio. “Isa, forgive me for disturbing you, but did he just touch your ass?” he asked in bewilderment. Balado hesitantly confirmed the attack. Then Abad demanded: “That makes me angry, pull this idiot in front of the camera.”
The camera then panned to the right. The man was still standing next to the reporter. No trace of regret. “As much as you want to ask what channel we’re from, do you really have to touch my ass? I’m doing a live show and working,” Balado finally told the man. He in turn denied touching her and turned away. As he walked away, he tried to stroke her head. It couldn’t be more brutal.
In any case, the man will not get away with it unpunished. That same afternoon, Spanish police shared a video via X (formerly Twitter) showing the man being arrested. The authority wrote: “Arrest for sexual harassment of a reporter during a live television broadcast in Madrid.”
As the BBC reported, Mediaset España, owner of the news channel, released a statement. It expressed its support after the “absolutely unbearable situation” Balado suffered. It also says that “any form of intimidation or aggression is categorically rejected.”
Balada also received support online. Irene Montero, Spain’s equal opportunities minister, spoke out. “What used to be ‘normal’ is no longer normal. Unwanted touching is sexual violence and we say: put an end to impunity. Only a yes is a yes.” Labor Secretary Yolanda Diaz also agrees. This cannot go unpunished.” (Mrs)
