Invaded the air defense zone: dozens of Chinese fighter jets off the coast of Taiwan

Dozens of Chinese fighter jets were spotted off the coast of Taiwan on Wednesday.

Taiwan says it has registered dozens of military aircraft and some Chinese naval vessels along its coasts. The Ministry of Defense in Taipei said 68 aircraft and 10 ships belonging to the People’s Liberation Army were discovered on Thursday morning (local time). Forty aircraft entered the air defense zone in southern Taiwan.

Taiwan regularly reports such actions by the Chinese military. However, this time the number of aircraft was relatively high compared to previous events.

Democratic Taiwan, with a population of about 24 million, has had an independent government since 1949, but Beijing considers the island part of the People’s Republic of China and has repeatedly threatened invasion in the past.

US in the middle of the conflict

In the so-called Taiwan Strait, a strait between the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian and Taiwan, incidents continue to occur that cause international tensions between China and Taiwan and its allies such as the US. Last weekend, for example, an American destroyer and a Canadian Navy frigate passed through the passage. The US Navy said it was a routine crossing in accordance with international law.

The Chinese military said it was closely monitoring transit and would remain vigilant in the region. In recent days, several international media outlets have also reported, citing analysts, that China is currently conducting a large-scale military exercise in the Western Pacific, where Taiwan is also located. An aircraft carrier would also be involved.

When asked about this on Wednesday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry did not specifically discuss the exercise. Taiwan is part of the territory of the People’s Republic of China, spokeswoman Mao Ning said. “The relevant parties should immediately stop provocative actions and stop being troublemakers disrupting peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait,” she said, referring to the recent US Navy transit.
