Biden takes the threat of impeachment by the Republicans on foot with the American authorities: the wife of ‘El Chapo’ is released in California

US President Joe Biden responded with demonstrative calm to Republicans’ threat of possible impeachment against him. He “has work to do,” Biden said on Wednesday evening (local time) on the sidelines of a campaign event in McLean, a suburb of Washington in the US state of Virginia.

The Democratic politician said he was dealing with issues that affect Americans’ daily lives and wasn’t sure why Republicans brought a case against him in the first place. From what he understood, they wanted to accuse him of alleged official misconduct to paralyze the government, Biden said in view of the upcoming budget negotiations.

The White House had previously dismissed the Republicans’ allegations as “unfounded.” “They’ve been investigating the president all year and found no evidence – nothing – that he did anything wrong,” Biden spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said in Washington on Wednesday. Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy knows his own lawmakers do not support the push to investigate Biden in sufficient numbers, Jean-Pierre said. “This is a political stunt.”

McCarthy took the first concrete steps toward possible impeachment proceedings against Biden on Tuesday. There are credible allegations that Biden was involved in his son Hunter’s illegal activities, so more investigation is needed, he said. He set up committees for further investigation, but abstained from voting in the House of Representatives. The Republicans have a very narrow majority there with 222 of the 435 seats. Just a few dissenters are enough to block projects.

Even if the proceedings in the House of Representatives were successful, impeaching Biden would require a two-thirds majority in the other chamber of Congress, the Senate.
