Former American Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney does not want to run for senator for the state of Utah for a second time in 2024. “At the end of a new term I would be in my mid-eighties,” the 76-year-old said on Wednesday in a video message on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter. “To be honest, it is. time for a new generation of leaders.” Neither President Joe Biden, 80, nor his predecessor Donald Trump, 77, could adequately lead their parties on major future issues involving the national budget and foreign policy, Romney said.

In response to a question from reporters, the Utah senator said, “Oh, I think it would be great if both of them (Trump and Biden, editor’s note) were there and their respective parties had someone from the following that would allow the generation to choose.”

Romney repeatedly opposed the Republican president’s policies during Trump’s term in office. Romney also voted to impeach Trump in the Senate in 2020 and 2021. Lately, he has been increasingly seen as isolated within his party – where many continue to support Trump. Trump is currently running for his party’s presidential nomination in the late 2024 elections.

Romney, a Mormon, served as governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007 and lost to Democrat Barack Obama in the 2012 presidential election. In November 2018, he won the Senate elections in Utah.
