Acts of violence, human rights violations and attacks on democracy were well documented at the time the sanctions were imposed. The EU countries have therefore not made an error of assessment. The verdict can still be appealed to the highest European court, the European Court of Justice (ECJ).
The EU states imposed sanctions on the South American country in 2017. For example, military goods were no longer allowed to be sold or transferred to Venezuela. Venezuela filed a lawsuit against it, the judges of the EU court dismissed the lawsuit as inadmissible in 2018, but the ECJ overturned the judgment and referred the case back to the court, which now ruled again against Venezuela.
Venezuela has been in a serious crisis for years. According to the UN, more than seven million people have left the country in recent years due to poverty and violence, most of them to Colombia.
