Two of Slovakia’s most prominent politicians publicly fought during the election campaign. As TV images and internet videos showed, conservative-populist former Prime Minister Igor Matovic drove a car into an open-air press conference of the left-wing populist opposition party Smer-SSD, which was leading in the polls, on Wednesday to protest the Het. There was a scuffle with former Interior Minister Robert Kalinak. The police also had to intervene.

Using a loudspeaker from his car, Matovic drowned out the campaign speeches of Smer politicians with insults and accusations that a law passed by the then Smer government in March 2018 was responsible for thousands of migrants now coming to Slovakia. At the time, Kalinak, as Minister of the Interior, was responsible for the law intended to give refugees temporary residence status. The Smer press conference was dedicated to the topic of migration; The country’s parliamentary elections will take place on September 30.

As seen in the videos, Smer politicians tried to turn off the loudspeaker mounted on the car. Kalinak, who had personally insulted Matovic over the loudspeaker, wanted to take the microphone away from him, which Matovic prevented by kicking him out of the car. After mutual blows, the police separated the politicians.

Matovic surprisingly won the 2020 parliamentary elections as a protest politician after causing a stir with rallies in front of the private homes of Smer politicians.
