It is no secret that for Russian President Vladimir Putin (70) nothing is more sacred than his own safety. For example, for fear of attack, the Kremlin chief travels exclusively by armored train.
Vitaly Brischaty, a former guard at the Russian security service FSO, knows how bad Putin’s paranoia really is. In an interview with the independent Russian television channel Dozhd, the security guard talked about his time in the Russian state apparatus.
One statement from the ex-guard is particularly surprising: not only Putin himself and his entourage, but also his lesser-known homes and those of representatives of the Russian elite are under high protection.
However, the report does not reveal how close the security officer, who was on duty in the city of Oliva in Crimea, was to Putin. Brischaty now lives in Ecuador. He fled there after making critical comments about the war in Ukraine.
As Brischaty further reports in the interview, numerous senior Russian officials are said to have their mansions not far from the coastal town of Oliva – and benefit from the FSO’s surveillance. In addition to the properties of Russian President Vladimir Putin himself, this part of the Russian-occupied island is also home to the homes of ex-president Dmitry Medvedev (57) and the head of the FSB secret service, Alexander Bortnikov (71).
Although Putin places a lot of responsibility on the security service, he does not seem to really trust his own people, according to Brischaty. It could well happen that the Kremlin boss announces his arrival at two airports at the same time, but the president will arrive by ship. “This shows how much this man fears for his life,” the ex-guard told the Russian broadcaster.
Brischaty also reports that he had to meet strict requirements as a security guard. He was strictly forbidden to have contact with people who condemned the war. Failure to comply would have resulted in a severe penalty. The same applied to citizens from Ukraine, the US and the European Union.
The fact that one of his friends now lives in the US and is critical of the war worried the ex-guard. The Kremlin could have opened an investigation against his friend if he merely liked pro-Ukrainian content on Instagram. Looking back, this is incredible for Brischaty. “That’s just crazy.” (dzc)
