Three and a half years after a painting by Vincent van Gogh was stolen from a Dutch museum, the painting has been traced with the help of an art detective.

“The Groninger Museum is extremely happy and relieved that the work of art is back,” the exhibition center reported on Tuesday. An art detective played a key role in the case and the museum greatly appreciates that.

Image was stolen during Corona closure

When the Singer Laren Museum near Amsterdam was broken into at night, the painting was created with the title ‘Spring Garden. The Nuenen parish garden from 1884 was stolen. The museum was closed at the time due to the Corona crisis. The work was on loan from the Groninger Museum.

According to the museum, the police were closely involved in all phases of the recovery of the painting. No information could be provided about ongoing investigations. In 2021, the police had already arrested a suspect who was subsequently convicted.

French art theft convicted

For example, the newspaper De Telegraaf, which claims to be involved in the search for the painting, reports that an art robber and career criminal from France has been convicted of the theft. The work of art, worth millions, fell into the hands of a criminal organization that wanted to use it as a means of exchange in connection with a prison sentence.

The art detective’s negotiations initially came to nothing. How he managed to get Van Gogh’s painting back was not disclosed. (SDA)
