American cave explorer Mark Dickey (40) was rescued from a deep cave in Turkey after a large-scale rescue operation. This was after he became ill during an expedition about nine days ago and was unable to leave the cave alone.

The day-long rescue operation with hundreds of volunteers was now a success. Dickey was rescued on a stretcher from a depth of more than a kilometer in several stages. Step by step he was brought to freedom.

The American researcher was wrapped in silver foil. He had a full beard and seemed weak but happy. Dickey was conscious and breathing on his own, without a mask.

Safe after midnight

He was able to leave the cave after midnight local time, the Turkey Caving Association said on Twitter. The rescue operation was thus “successfully completed”.

“It was a very demanding rescue operation,” said Recep Salci, head of Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority. “There are some very narrow passages.”

Fiance by his side

The 40-year-old’s ordeal in the Morca cave, Turkey’s third deepest, began on September 2. Dickey suffered a gastrointestinal hemorrhage at a depth of approximately 4,000 feet and was unable to return to the surface on his own.

He was first raised a few hundred meters and stabilized. He had been waiting there for rescue for about a week while receiving IV drips.

Dickey is considered an elite cave expert. He had descended into the Morca Cave with his fiancée. His future wife, Jessica Van Ord, did not leave his side until he was rescued. (kes)
